Sustainable Holidays: Finding Joy Without Overspending

With the rising cost of living, I’ve become more intentional about where my money goes and how I celebrate. I’m focusing on slowing down, living sustainably, and adding more meaning to my choices—including during the holiday season.

Decorating

One of my favorite tricks? Shopping my own house! I’m always surprised by the colorful items tucked away that can be repurposed into festive décor. Mixing and matching what I already own saves money and gives my space a fresh, personal touch.

When I do want to add something new, I love thrifting. Estate and garage sales, thrift stores and online marketplaces are full of treasures. Plus, shopping secondhand keeps items out of landfills and adds unique charm to your home.

Gift Giving

With a little creativity and prep, it’s possible to celebrate beautifully, give thoughtfully, and tread a little lighter on the planet.

  • Shop secondhand – vintage books, jewelry, or decor make fun gifts with stories behind them.

  • Bake or create – homemade treats or hand-crafted items are always heartfelt.

  • Give experiences – dinner together, a day trip, or tickets to a local event create memories that last longer than stuff.

Thoughtful creativity allows us to give meaningful gifts without burdening our budgets or the planet. The holidays are a chance to remember that real joy springs from connection, not consumption. By slowing down, practicing intention, and embracing resourcefulness, we can celebrate in ways that nurture both us and the world we share.

Here’s to a season of gratitude, creativity, and joy.
