One of our many passions at Bluefish Creative is art and sustainability. On this Earth Day 2025, we celebrate 3 artists/organizations who are bringing attention to the issues facing us today with pollution and overconsumption.
Thomas Dambo
Dambo is a Danish artist who has constructed over 120 trolls out of completely reused and reclaimed wood. “My mission is Waste No More: our world is drowning in trash while we are running out of natural resources. I spend my life showing the world that beautiful things can be made out of trash, I give new life to discarded materials by turning them into large-scale artworks.” -Thomas Dambo
My husband and I visited Rita the Rock Planter in Victor, Colorado earlier this year, and our next stop is Isak Heartstone in Breckenridge. See Dambo’s global trollmap here.
Washed Ashore
The Washed Ashore Project, based in Oregon, creates giant sea life sculptures made entirely out of marine debris collected from beaches.
The organization also teaches environmental conservation and sustainability and has designed and shared a curriculum for educators and homeschoolers on their website. https://www.washedashore.org/education-hub/
Washed Ashore’s art has been exhibited at, the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, Shedd Aquarium and many other botanical centers and zoos throughout the United States,
Jane Perkins
Jane Perkins is a UK-based artist who calls herself a re-maker. Perkins is known for her elaborate portraits created from found objects like this of a lion titled “Pride”.
Jane also creates wearables from recycled materials like this necklace that uses old toys and beads. Jane’s commitment to creating art from found objects is both inspiring and also brings awareness to the practice of upcycling and reusing already manufactured items to create beautiful things.
